Drop-Off Recycling

Drop-Off Recycling containers are for Porter County residents only. No commercial or small business recycling permitted.

Accepted Materials:

  • Cardboard - Flatten all boxes
  • Paper - Magazines, junk mail, newspaper, office paper, envelopes, file folders, cereal boxes, cake mix boxes, paper back books, phone books, mixed paper; bundle and place in paper bag before dropping off
  • Glass - Clear, green, or brown bottles and jars; rinse. It is no longer necessary to remove the labels. Lids and labels can be left on.
  • Metal - Aluminum, steel and bi-metal cans ONLY: pop cans, soup cans, coffee cans. Cans should be empty and labels can be left on.
  • Plastic - #1 - 7 (excluding 6), such as milk jugs, soda bottles, detergent containers, shampoo bottles, water bottles, cooking oil bottles, peanut butter jars, milk and juice jugs, margarine/butter tubs, yogurt cups, ketchup bottles, household cleaners and coffee creamers. Lids should be on and secured! Please rinse and flatten. What do these codes mean?

Tips:

  • Leave caps on plastic and glass bottles and jars.
  • No plastic bags. Instead, take them to recovery programs like those at WalMart and Jewel.
  • Shredded paper is acceptable, but must be contained in paper bags.
  • Aseptic packages, or waxy containers/boxes, are okay to recycle.
  • No aerosol cans.

Materials NOT Accepted:

  • No self-stick labels, gum/candy wrappers, tissue paper, waxed paper, paper cups, paper towels, shredded paper, used paper plates, pizza boxes. No fiber soiled with food waste.
  • Glass - No window glass, plate glass, dishes, ceramics, light bulbs or mirror, or Pyrex.
  • Wood - No pallets or construction lumber
  • Hazardous Waste - No motor oil, paint, automotive batteries, antifreeze or liquids of any kinds
  • Plastics - No STYROFOAM (packing peanuts, carry-out containers), CD/DVD cases, plastic silverware, film plastics (plastic bags, saran wrap, shrink wrap, bubble wrap), Solo cups, prescription bottles, vinyl siding, swimming pool liners or children's pools
  • Metal - No scrap metal, appliances or aluminum siding, aerosol cans or aluminum foil.
  • Household Items - No clothing, shoes or furniture
  • Vinyl siding
  • Tires
